Ask about Layaway terms. Look for the special porcelain & glass with bird and butterfly themes.
This is a 19th century German Berlin hard paste porcelain covered jar. The maker is F.A. Schumann. The date is circa 1851-1869.
The jar is 7” high and 5 ¾” at the base. The function may be to hold cigars, thus it is a humidor, or it may be used to crackers, biscuits or cookies, or tea. It is a large jar, and the hand fits inside easily, therefore it may have multiple functions.
The blank has raised panels with a light blue ground and blue scroll designs. Around the lower part are ribbons raised on the mold, and colored in blue, which is a feature of Berlin porcelain from this time period. There are more raised scrolls around the bottom, outlined in gold. The lid clicks into place, and it has a hole drilled into to allow air into the jar.
The inset panels show different painted nosegays of dramatically colored flowers, such a roses, violets, pansies and morning glories. The colors are vivid, in pink, purple, lavender, blue, green, red, orange, yellow, brown and white. The flowers are painted with exquisite detail and are obviously painted by a very skilled artist.
The finial is a round knob covered in gold.
This is an old piece and so there is fading to the blue ground in several places. There is rubbing wear to the gold gild. The underside of the lid shows a blob of porcelain putty to keep the knob in place, and part of the putty has broken off. There is one large glaze skip on the bottom inside of the jar, and a few on the underside of the lid. There is one indentation on the bottom, on top of a gold band, and it is covered in gold; if it is a repair, the color was matched well. I point to this small defect with a red arrow in one photo. There are no chips, cracks or crazing. The flaws are those of age, with fading to the blue ground and gold trim.
The bottom of the jar is unglazed. The mark is the eagle with SPM below.
