This is a 19th century French Haviland Barbotine vase, painted in the Impressionistic Japonisme style by the artist Emile-Justin Merlot at the Auteuil Studio in Paris. The age is circa 1876 to 1882.

Merlot painted landscapes and impressionistic flowers, similar to Bocquet and other Auteuil artists. And like the other Auteuil artists, Merlot combined the Asian or Japanese techniques of decoration as applied to French Impressionism, a form of Japonisme. The Barbotine glaze has mottled shades of green and blue. The flowers are roses, in shades of pink, mauve, cream and brown. The leaves are green, yellow and brown.

The vase is narrow and oval, with a long oval mouth, and stands on four feet. It is 5 ½” high, 12” long and 5 ¼” wide.

This type of glaze is difficult to photograph, so there are bright white glares in some photos.

The vase was decorated at the L’Atelier d”Auteuil Haviland, or the Workshop of Auteuil Haviland, in Paris.

The Auteuil Studio produced pottery pieces, a terra-cotta, which is considered to be a form of faience.

The artist’s signature is part of a M, on the front, right above the left foot. I provide a close up photo of the signature.

The vase has crazing because all of the Barbotine glazing is crazed. There are small nicks and glaze wear around the edges of the feet. One of the back feet has a large chip broken off the outer edge. Another foot has a chip on the outer edge that shows a bit of color over it, meaning there is a repair. There is some separation in the pottery on the unglazed bottom of two of the feet. There are some small rough nicks in the glaze around the mouth. There are some bumps in the glaze.

The incised mark is Haviland & Co followed by Limoges. Additionally there is an incised number 79.
