This is a beautiful French Paris faience, or soft paste porcelain or pottery, vase. The age is 19th century, circa 1850 - 1870.

The vase is 8 ¾” high, 7 ¼” long and 3 ½” wide.

The vase has a bulbous shape, flaring out at the sides, and tapering in at the foot and neck.

The outside is glazed a rich blue deep cobalt blue, and there is shading to the glaze, going from a darker to a brighter shade of the cobalt blue. Cobalt was a difficult glazing color to produce on faience because of type of firing process using high heats.

The front of the vase shows two insets, one rectangular and colored a light blue with a gold design. On the round bottom corner of this inset is a circular one, colored in brown and gold, showing a scene of a coast line with flying birds, probably sea gulls. Above the insets and to the right is a gold bird and a gold butterfly. Climbing up the left are gold stems and leaves with gray flowers. The gray is probably another type of gold, to give the look of silver or platinum. The back of the vase shows two more gold butterflies, and a long branch with leaves. The sides of the vase are speckled with gold.

There is crazing, mostly seen inside the vase, because of the type of material used to make the vase. The cobalt glaze has a few light scratches in it. There are a couple of tiny nicks around the bottom edge. There are no chips or cracks.

The bottom of the vase is unglazed. There are two impressed marks. The first is St Denis inside a box. The second is a number 726
