This is a 19th century French art glass vase. The age is circa 1870 to 1890.
The vase is 13 high, 8 long and 4 ½ wide.
The glass is brown, and similar to custard glass, except that you can see the shadow of your hand when you hold the vase up to the light through the glass, thus the glass is not entirely opaque.
The shape is bulbous, tapering down to a round point between the four applied feet, and tapers in at the wide neck.
The enameling on the vase is beautiful, and the painting is in the form of a landscape or garden scene that reaches around on all sides of the vase. On the front, a song bird is perched on a sturdy branch. There are blossoms in shades of brown and pink. Rocks and large green leaves are painted around the bottom. The painting is of exceptional quality.
The four feet are applied and gilded in gold, with touches of white enamel for decoration. There is a little bit of wear and discoloration to the gold.
The gold around the rim of the mouth is mostly rubbed away.
There are no chips or cracks. There are some light scratches in the glass, indicative of the age of the piece.
The bottom of the vase is polished smooth, with some minor dimpling in the glass.
