This is a 19th century Bohemian small glass vase; the maker is Harrach. The age is circa 1890.

The vase is 3 ½” high and 3” wide.

The glass color is in the amber category, but more of a green-brown than honey-gold. The vase is paneled slightly, enough to give the neck and mouth an interesting shape.

The applied salamander is made of bright blue glass and it is on the front of the vase, with its feet and head curling up toward the neck. There are small blobs of different colored enamel added to the top of the salamander.

To the left of the salamander is a sea life scene hand painted in enamel, showing a fish and water lily type of leaves with blue and pink flowers. Below the salamander are hand enameled sea shells. To the right are more leaves and flowers. On the back side of the vase is a spray of flowers.

The rim is polished flat. The inside of the rim is a straight edge. The outside of the rim is chamfered, or beveled, slightly; this is a characteristic of Harrach, not Moser. The pontil is round, slightly concave, and polished.

You can view more glass pieces made by Harrach, which also have applied salamanders, in the book “Collectible Bohemian Glass 1880 – 1940” by Robert & Deborah Truitt on page 64. Moser also made similar glass pieces with applied salamanders and enameled scenes of fish and plant life, however this vase is Harrach, not Moser.

The inside of the rim is a little bit rough to the touch, but there are no chips or nicks. There is a little bit of residue inside the vase. When I took the photos, I inadvertently showed some dust on the inside of the vase, which has since been removed. There may have been gold trim around the rim and foot at one time, and if so, it is now mostly worn away.
