This is a 19th century English glass vase. The date is circa 1885 to 1890.
The vase is 8 ½” high, and 6 5/8” long and 3” wide at the top.
The glass is an opal white over a shaded ruby or cranberry. The top is multi-crimped, forming a fan shape, with a clear amber glass trail. The feet are a clear amber glass, or honey gold, in the same color as the rim trail, and in a wishbone shape.
The front of the glass has a hand painted enameled decoration. On the top left is an enamel butterfly, in black and gray with touches of pink and white. There are white and pink flowers with yellow, green and black middles. The stems and leaves are in shades of brown. There is a little bit of gold flourishes on the sides of the decoration, but the gold decoration is mostly worn away.
When we see a butterfly or flying insect on English glass from the 19th century, we tend to think the glass maker is Thomas Webb.
The pontil is round and polished smooth. The white glass can be seen through the amber glass of the pontil, another attribute of Thomas Webb.
There are no chips, cracks or nicks other than a few tiny pinprick nicks on the amber feet.
