This is a French Old Paris architectural hard paste porcelain veilleuse, which is a teapot on a warming stand, or a tea warmer. The age is 19th century, circa 1870 to 1890.

You can view another veilleuse like this one in the book, “Veilleuses A Collector’s Guide” by Harold Newman, page 67. The author describes this veilleuse as being an Alsatian stone mill and probably made later in the 19th century, versus earlier.

The architectural design is meant to show a flour mill in a region of France that was under the control of France and Germany over the years, thus there were different cultural influences on the architecture. Thus, the historical significance is more than the veilleuse being a teapot, because it shows the significance of how German and French concepts combined and influenced the structural designs of working mills in the 19th century.

The veilleuse is about 10” high and 5” wide.

There are three pieces to this veilleuse: the base, which is most of the building; the teapot, which is the roof; and the lid. The vertical chimney is the handle of the pot, and on the opposite side is the spout. At one time there would have been a small tray to hold the candle, or godet, but the tray has disappeared.

The front of the veilleuse shows the rectangular stones of the mill. There is a small slotted window on the bottom and a large 4-pane window on the top. The windows also show the candle light from within the veilleuse. On the front is a porcelain bird figure, in pink and gray. The mill appears to be in three levels, as defined by the brown enamel horizontal bands.

A path winds around the front to a set of curving steep stairs on the right side of the veilleuse. The steps lead to an inset door with a stone mantel in the top of the door frame. There is another window in the door to show the candle light and to release smoke and steam. On the right corner is a green tree or vine, growing up the side of the building and arching to the left over the top of the door.

On the back side is the hole where the candle tray, or godet sits. There is another narrow window, with two panes. Again, you can see the bricks or stones in detail. The left side shows the running water below the mill, and this is probably a fast moving stream or creek.

The roof is a burnt orange-brown color with a steep slope.

There are no chips, cracks or crazing other than what I explain here. The tip of the spout shows a brown residue, so this may be a very old repair. There is built-up age grime from use over the years, particularly inside the teapot. There is a line in the glaze at one outside edge, very small. There are a few glaze line skips on the interior walls. There are some glazing irregularities.
