This is a 19th century hard paste porcelain veilleuse, Old Paris in France, early 1800s, or possibly late 18th century, or late 1700s.

There are five pieces to this set. There is a base, a middle, a demitasse teapot, a lid and a round tray (godet.) I do not believe the round insert tray is original to the set. The entire veilleuse is 10 ¾” high to the top of the finial.

You can view another veilleuse with a rose finial in the book “Faience et Porcelaine de Paris” by regine de Plinval de Guillebon, page 161. The veilleuse shown in the photograph dates to 1772 to 1775, the rose is described as being influenced by Meissen, and the porcelain maker is Locre, well-known in Paris in the late 1700s.

This specific veilleuse is not shown in any of the books depicting collections of veilleuses, so I cannot refer you to another reference or museum cite.

The bottom piece is original to the entire set. It is white, with reticulated holes spaced evenly around the body, so as to let out the light of the candle. The round tray sits on the bottom inside a raised ridge of porcelain. It is glazed white. At one time there was gold trim, but it is mostly worn away from age.

The middle piece inserts into the bottom base. As you see towards the top, there are evenly spaced round holes that match the holes on the bottom piece. On the front and back are French artist painted scenes. The front scene shows an old lighthouse, so if you are a collector of lighthouse paintings, then this is a unique item for your collection. The lighthouse is made of stone, attached to a building. On the top of the lighthouse is perched the structure that sets out the light to the ships at sea. In the ocean there is a sailing ship with sails furled. People are walking on the sandy beach. There are mountains, trees, and clear unpolluted water. Perhaps this scene is of an actual lighthouse that still exists or existed once. On the back side, the scene shows high arches, stone structures, an iron rail, and people standing about on the street. I suppose I am supposed to recognize this old building, but gosh, Paris is nothing but miles and miles of Gothic old buildings, and so no, I don’t recognize where this scene is supposed to be. The top flares up and the rim is slightly scalloped. There is some gold design overlay of leaves and berries. Of course, there is wear to the gold trim.

The teapot shows another harbor scene on the front, with old buildings on the quay, sailing ships, mountains, greenery and gorgeous water. The back scene appears to be another view of the old Gothic building from the lower part of the veilleuse. The top flares up, with a faded gold overlay design. The finial is bright pink rose, and the green stem and leaves adorn the dome of the lid. Around the top and bottom of the pot’s handle are more leaves and a rose bud on each side of the handle.

The insert tabs on the inside of the lid are broken off as you can see in the photos. There is a difference to the glazing under the lid and inside the pot; this difference is in color and texture, with the color being more of an off-white, and with respect to touch, the glaze feels a bit more rough to the fingertips. Inside the pot, on the bottom, is a glaze skip or crack in the glaze that does not go through to the underside of the pot. I show this irregularly shaped line in a close-up photo. On the middle part, there is a line in the glaze on the inside, the part that is opposite to the scene of the Gothic building. I tried to take a photo of this line, but it is too faint and doesn’t show up. You can see it if you examine the inside with a magnifying glass under a strong light. There are probably a few pinpricks of roughness along the edges here and there. There is the possibility of some gold touch-up a long time ago, or maybe not. The undersides are dirty. There are no significant chips, cracks or crazing. I mentioned the flaws that were obvious to me.

Please email me if you have any questions. Thank you for looking at this beautiful piece of art. I hope you enjoy viewing the photos as much as I enjoy showing this spectacular veilleuse to you.
