1980 Crane for President (R- Illinois) ~ Vtg Orig 1" Pinback ~ Philip Miller "Phil" Crane (born November 3, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois) was a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from 1969 to 2005, representing the 8th District of Illinois in the northwestern suburbs of Chicago. At the time of his defeat in the 2004 election, Crane was the longest-serving Republican member of the House. In 1978, shortly before the general election, Crane announced that he would be a candidate for the Republican nomination for president. This surprised many observers, as Crane had supported Reagan for president two years earlier. At the time of his announcement, Crane expressed doubts that Reagan would run again (after two failed attempts for the nomination in 1968 and 1976), and intimated that, should Reagan run, he would likely drop out. However, he did stay in the race after Reagan's entry, and was one of the early candidates to drop out of the race during the Republican primaries.

1960s Gordon Allott for President (R- Colorado) ~ Vtg Orig 1.25" Pinback ~ NM, a favorite son pinback from the 1960s for Gordon Llewellyn Allott (January 2, 1907 – January 17, 1989), Republican. Born in Pueblo, Colorado, Allott graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1927 and from its law school in 1929. He was admitted to the bar in 1929 and commenced practice in Pueblo. He moved to Lamar, Colorado in 1930 and continued practicing law. Allott was the county attorney of Prowers County, Colorado in 1934 and from 1941 to 1946. He was also the director of the First Federal Savings & Loan Association of Lamar from 1934 to 1960. He became Lamar's city attorney in 1937, and served in this position until 1941. During World War II, Allott served as a major in the United States Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946. After the war he became a district attorney in the fifteenth judicial district from 1946 to 1948. He was the vice chairman of the Colorado Board of Paroles from 1951 to 1955, and he served as Lieutenant Governor of Colorado from 1951 to 1955. Allott was elected to the United States Senate in 1954. He was reelected in 1960 and again in 1966, and served from January 3, 1955 to January 3, 1973. There he was Chairman of the Republican Policy Committee. Allott died in Englewood, Colorado, and was interred in Fairmount Cemetery, Denver, Colorado. Paul Weyrich and George Will worked on his Senate staff.

He was the first Republican to hold the office of governor since 1877. He finished 3d in the New Hampshire primary in '68.

1950s-60s John Byrnes for President (R- Wisconsin) ~ Vtg 1.25" Favorite Son Pinback ~ From one of the national conventions, NM for BYRNES, John William, a Representative from Wisconsin; born in Green Bay, Brown County Wis., June 12, 1913; attended the public and parochial schools; was graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1936 and from the law school of the same university in 1938; was admitted to the bar in 1938 and commenced practice in Green Bay, Wis.; served as a special deputy commissioner of banking for the State of Wisconsin from 1938 until his resignation in 1940 to assume his duties as State senator; member of the State senate 1940-1944, serving as majority floor leader in 1943; elected as a Republican to the Seventy-ninth and to the thirteen succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1945-January 3, 1973); was not a candidate for reelection in 1972 to the Ninety-third Congress; returned to the practice of law in Washington, D.C.; was a resident of Arlington, Va., until his death in Marshfield, Wis., on January 12, 1985.

1972 Ashbrook: No Left Turns (R- Ohio) ~ Vtg Orig 1.25" Presidential Hopeful Pinback ~ John Milan Ashbrook (September 21, 1928 – April 24, 1982) was a Republican who served in the United States House of Representatives from Ohio from 1961 until his death. His father was William A. Ashbrook, a newspaper editor, businessman, and U.S. representative. After graduating from Harvard University in 1952 and from Ohio State University's law school in 1955, Ashbrook became publisher of his late father's newspaper, the Johnstown Independent. He was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1956 and served two terms. In 1960 his father's old seat in the U.S. House of Representatives opened up, and Ashbrook ran for and won it. In the 1972 presidential election, Ashbrook ran against incumbent Richard Nixon in some state primaries as an alternative conservative candidate. His slogan "No Left Turns" was illustrated by a mock traffic symbol of a left-turn arrow with a superimposed No symbol. It was meant to symbolize the frustration of some conservatives with Nixon, whom they saw as having abandoned conservative principles and "turned left" on issues such as budget deficits, affirmative action, the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency, wage and price controls, the gold standard, and most of all, improving relations with the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China with his policy of détente. He competed in the New Hampshire (9.8% of the vote), Florida (9%), and California (10%) primaries. He withdrew from the race after the California primary and "with great reluctance" supported Nixon. To this day, his campaign, although of minimal immediate impact, is remembered fondly by conservatives who admire Ashbrook for having stood for their principles.

1960s Stassen for President (R- Minnesota) ~ Vtg Orig 1+3/8" Pinback ~ Harold Edward Stassen (April 13, 1907 – March 4, 2001) was the 25th Governor of Minnesota from 1939 to 1943. After service in World War II, from 1948 to 1953 he was president of the University of Pennsylvania. In popular culture his name has become most identified with his fame as a perennial candidate for other offices, most notably and frequently President of the United States.
