A very nice lot from Montana: Yellowstone Lake from West Thumb; Sunset over Golfatara Plateau; Canyon; Yellowstone National Park ~ Geysers (3)- in all, 6 Vtg 1927 E.O. Hoppé Photogravures taken from an English language edition of a bound portfolio-book originally published in Germany— E.O. Hoppé, ROMANTIC AMERICA (Die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika) 1927. Ernst Otto Hoppé (1878-1972) was one of the best among prominent photographers of the Edwardian Era, taking portraits of royalty and famous political, literary and artistic figures as well as common folk, and generating a large body of work that came to include architecture and landscape, as well. Medium: Offered here are high-quality photogravures (i.e., made by taking a photograph, next producing an engraving plate from that photo, then printing the image in a richer ink on higher quality paper than that usually used for photo-prints). Rarely made today due to costs, a photogravure, such as the ones offered in this listing, combines the subtlety of a photograph & the artistic quality of a lithograph and, in all, results in a very impressive display. Condition: NM, well-preserved medium weight, high-quality paper (each w/ another image on the verso that does NOT distort the gravure shown in the scans) -- a few very slight waves due to age in the margins, barely visible only when viewed at an angle (which will flatten out when framed — no real problem, but I believe in disclosing any and all defects, no matter how insignificant) -- also, there may be tears along one margin, well away from the image as shown in the last scans. Size: the scan at the center is not to scale in relation to the other 3 scans; all the images are slightly off-center (L or R , not shown in scans as the plates are a bit too wide for my scanner bed) on plates @ c. 9 x 12“ overall, with generous matting margins that will allow for lots of framing options. BONUS~ 1872 Canon of the Yellowstone ~ An original woodcut print, image @ 6.5 x 6.25 that would look great matted out 1 to 3 inches in a vintage frame -- from Picturesque America or The Land We Live In (Vol 1, 1872 -- NY, D. Appleton & Co -- William Cullen Bryant, ed. -- NOTE: the dimensions given are for the image, not including caption, as shown in the scan -- EX to NM condition on high-quality, heavy stock paper, still somewhat glossy, with generous matting margins around the image ~ click on the pic & scroll down the next page to see eight enlarged views
