Vintage 40s black corde fabric handbag from Coronet has it all—sleek lines with novelty clasp, wonderfully machine-engraved frame, and body richly textured in hexagon-and-triangle pattern cording. Interior is lined in black satin with two gold satin-piped open sidewall pockets, above one of which is a label reading: “Coronet, Original Corde Handbag, Trademark, Patent Pending”.
The corners of the goldtone frame have the Jemco trademark along with three patents—from 1931, 1933, and 1934—for handbag frame elements; Jemco was the trademark of the J. E. Mergott Co. (the Jemco mark is familiar in many Arts & Crafts tooled leather purses although they were responsible only for making the frames).
Measuring 11” x 7” x 1”, this purse is in excellent condition; only trace of its age are a few tiny scuffs to the goldtone inside the purse frame, plating of which is bright and shiny overall.
