Vintage late 60s/early 70s blouse from Stella Sloat in a celery green moire satin takes its inspiration from the Victorian bodice (fitted, button-front shape), then adds edgy modernizing details like the oversized, ruffle-edged “paddles” at the ends of the neck-ties. Quality details abound, from the bound hems, seams, and buttonholes, to the snaps which reinforce the (self-fabric) front and cuff buttons and ensure that the blouse lies properly.

Labelled “Tailored by Sloat, New York”, it has a blue and white ILGWU label and is tagged a size 14. No fabric content label; fabric is a substantial silk or acetate satin faille with moire effect.

Exact measurements are: Bust 35”, shoulders 15”, waist 30”, hips 36”, sleeves 22” and length 23 ½”. Very good condition; only issue is two small, tea-colored flecks inside the collar (see photo #8).

Stella Sloat was one of the 3 American designers Diana Vreeland recommended when Jackie Kennedy wrote to her in 1960, seeking homegrown alternatives to the “unpatriotic” European couture she had come under fire for favoring. Jackie wanted clothes that were “simple” , “covered up”, and “the nearest to Balenciaga and Givenchy” possible, making Sloat--who had been designing for her family-run business since the 50s and who defined her high end sportswear separates as “what is left after you take everything away”--an ideal choice. After Sloat’s company closed in 1971, she went on to design for Dalton Cashmeres until the late 70s, circa dating this blouse to the very late 60s through 1971.
