Vintage authentic antique Shaker Society hand-crafted moulded maple kitchen dipper with turned handle with pine bottom. Hand molded maple vessel fastened together with copper brads measures 7-1/4 " in diameter x 4-1/2 " high. This large dipper and handle measure 14" to the tip of the handle.
Dippers were used to measure dry products. Making dippers was a Shaker craft similar to oval box-making. Both processes involved a meticulous soaking or steaming of strips of wood until it was flexible enough to bend around a mold.
Came from a private Boston collection sold at auction in New Lebanon, NY in 2002. It still has its natural finish. A very lovely piece.
