The "Southwest Battery", was originally built as a fort on the tip of Manhattan Island from 1808 to 1811 to defend New York Harbor during the War of 1812. In 1817, it was renamed Castle Clinton in honor of NYC Mayor, DeWitt Clinton. Deeded to the City in 1823, a restaurant and entertainment center was added in 1824 & again re-named "Castle Garden". In the 1840s a roof was added and it served as a opera house and theater until1855. From 1855 to 1890 it served as the principal immigrant landing depot for European immigrants entering the United States. From 1896 to 1941 it served as the New York City Aquarium. It now serves as a visitor information center for New York's National Parks and Monuments.
Back has a lengthy descriptive text on Castle Garden and New York harbor. View #V23219 was published by Keystone View Company New York; London; Sydney Australia ; and Portland Oregon (left margin). Copyrights are undated by Underwood & Underwood. We date the image between 1904 & 1920, when Underwood sold its stereoview negatives to Keystone.
INTERESTING SIDE NOTE: You may have also seen a nearly identical SV on our site published by Underwood. In fact, in this view the steam ships have moved only slightly to the left (directly behind Castle Garden) from their position in the Underwood view.
PHOTO NOTE: The photo images are very clean, crisp, sharp and in exceptional condition.
