Handwritten in script on the back is " Edwin Lewin, 1815-1895 , born at Kenton, Middlesex; buried at Haslemere, Surrey. Also on the back is a label for "Albert Flint LTD, Guilders and Framers, Fine Arts Depot, 158 Church Road, Hove" with "October 1928" handwritten on it.
The artist is unidentified. And although, there is considerable available information on the "cutters", there is very little on silhouette painters.
This remarkable silhouette came from the Ridgeway House, a wonderful period colonial home in Plainfield CT, featured in "Country Living" just a few years ago. Mrs. Ridgeway spent a lifetime filling this great house with wonderful 18th and early 19th Century Americana, including her wonderful collection of silhouettes, sold at auction in 2002 after her passing.
The image is 7-1/4" x 9-3/4"; framed it measures 9-1/4" x 12".
