Black Panther Leopards Hand Tooled Oversize Leather Purse

A quality 1940s or 1950s tooled leather handbag purse with scenes of two black jaguars or leopards (both types of cat are also known as panthers) on both front and back. The purse is quite large and could almost be used as a briefcase - 14-1/2" wide by 9-3/4" high by 4" deep at the bottom. The back of the bag has a full size tooled and painted stalking panther scene with bamboo stalks and leaves. The same image is hand tooled on the front. The front flap has a different encircled sitting panther on a tree trunk design.

The purse has a classic bullet twist catch in pewter and a 1-3/4" wide carry strap attached to sturdy, heavy brass rings. The strap is fairly long, with the center extending about 16" above the top of the purse. The inside is lined in green suede leather and has open pockets along each side wall. The exterior has only one real condition issue - about an inch of missing leather lacing at the right front edge of the flap. The interior has some typical soiling and ink marks but no tears. Truly a fabulous vintage purse and no doubt one of a kind.
