Pair of Satsuma Vases, Japanese, CA.1880

This wonderful Matching Pair of late 19th C. Japanese Satsuma Vases is truly a matched set, with a "Right" and a "Left" vase. Each vase has the decor of Samurai Warriors and their Retinue carrying lances, swords, and War Banners, against a wooded mountainous landscape.

The Vase on the left features a Samurai on a Red Horse, looking over his shoulder as he is being pursued by the Warrior on a Black Horse on the Vase on the right....!!

The reverse of one features 2 warriors with weapons in front of a great walled Fortress, with an elaborate gate against a wooded background. The other features 4 crouching warriors, with flags & pikes, with an elaborate Tent in the foreground.

The neck of each vase is decorated with 2 framed panels featuring mountain and lake scenes, surrounded by wonderful enamelled Diapered Bands and panels.....the bottom of each vase has the Diapered enamel bands also.

Each Vase is signed with a Red block signature of Kagoshima, and a description of the Story being depicted in gold characters (see Photo)....the size is 9.5" high x 6" diameter. Both are in excellent condition, with extremely faint wear on the gold rims at the top.

A fabulous pair of Satsuma vases, with a story behind the decorations...all hand painted in the finest quality....we have had these in our personal collection for quite some time, and now it's time for them to travel to your collection!!
