~ Five-Year Anniversary Sale!~ 10-30% off during May. **Layaways Welcome** Thanks to all my customers!
Made of extremely fine porcelain - very hard and thin-walled. There are no chips, cracks, or crazing and minimal gold wear - ca. 5% on tips of bead around rim and 10% on handle curves. These items look even better in person. Teapot measures 7" from handle to spout and stands 5" tall. Creamer is 3" tall and 3 1/2" from spout to handle; sugar is 4 1/2" handle to handle and 3 3/4" tall. A very striking set!
The molded floral decoration and ornate handle forms place these pieces in the family of molds found on RS Steeple and RS Germany Wing Mark items. The embossed cross mark on bases may indicate that the set was made in the factory responsible for embossed Star marks (Gaston, Fourth Series, pp. 146-7). This mark is a variant of Gaston's mold mark 14. Please stop by again when you're in the neighborhood!
Some recent articles written for the website of the International Association of RS Prussia Collectors, Inc. have addressed issues surrounding unmarked pieces. (Please see my "Favorite Links" on my homepage for the link to this site). I have included here an excerpt from a recent article by Allen Marcus:
"...predominantly gold-colored R. S. Prussia items are frequently found to be unmarked. Perhaps this is the case because, during the manufacturing process, the firing occurred before the final design was completed. This would differ from the china that had little or no gold in their design. For items having much gold, the final gold design work was probably completed after firing, when the detailed painting had to be very precise. When gold was used extensively in the china's background or framing, as with keyhole plates, it was probably applied by hand and after the initial firing. Having been applied by hand and after firing and glazing, the gold painting would become more susceptible to wear and discoloring...The logo decals (usually the red mark/wreath and star, and steeple marks) were applied after the design decals were applied and the non-gold painting was completed. This would have occurred just before the item was fired in the kiln. In the case of the gold-colored pieces, additional work was needed after firing. The R. S. factories, probably for practical reasons, did not apply the logos above the glaze. They could be easily rubbed off or become fragmented. Other theories are that unmarked pieces were simply left unmarked due to error or to conceal the country of origin during embargo periods. I don't think we'll ever know for certain why so much R. S. china is unmarked...."
