This unused card features a well-known painting by Nicolai Alexandrov Yarochenko (1846-1898) that depicts one of the infamous railway cars that were converted to prison cars for transporting exiles and political prisoners to Siberia. As discussed by Solzhenitsyn in his Gulag Archipelago, there were tales of these cars used in Tzarist times, but that it became a favorite means of transport in the 1920s and the exclusive method from the 1930s on. The poignancy of the scene is heartbreaking as the prisoners (perhaps a family) watch the freedom of birds just beyond the bars of their window. And yet the seeming irony of the painting's title, "Everywhere is Life", offers a stoic and hopeful message.

The card is unused and was likely issued as a series devoted to great Russian artists. The back includes the name of the artist and painting in Russian and French and the title of the series, as well as the publisher (all in Russian). The card is #169 in the series. In good/very good condition with minor edge and moderate corner wear & rounding. Please stop in again when you're browsing on Ruby Lane!
