This charming French plate has a beautiful robin-egg blue background (like Sevres 'celeste blue' with a hint of turquoise) and features a central scene of a mountainous landscape with a village nestled its green valley. In the wooded and rocky terrain at the foreground, we see a man consulting a paper (his map?) while a boy waits with walking stick in hand. Further back on the trail is a man in a blue cape. Tourists in the French Alps, perhaps?! Surrounding the scene are a trio of cartouches framed with ornate gilded scrolls. Each shows a French-styled country manor or modest chateau. This truly unique plate has a delightfully whimsical and folk-style quality to its subject matter and execution - and yet the artist was quite successful in the depiction of mountains and forest - great colors!
This 8 3/8" scalloped plate is in very good condition with no chips, nicks, cracks or hairlines. There is minimal wear or fading to the paintings and minor gold wear to the scrolling that frames each cartouche (ca. 10-15%). There is one fine, 1/2" scratch at bottom of the landscape scene on the ground below the seated man. The only marking I can find is what seems to be an impressed, lowercase and cursive 'g' on the underside. This is likely a Sevres or Old Paris-type plate from the mid- to late 1800s, but has stylistic features which may also be associated with early Haviland ("Old Limoges: Haviland Porcelain Design and Decor, 1845-1865", by Barbara Wood and Robert Doares, 2005).
