This gently scalloped plate features a cupid/cherub aiming its arrow of love at a beautiful Greek maiden (or goddess - Venus?) who sits in a rose bower. The scene is set in the clouds and is colored in pastels. I have seen other plates with this image as well as different mythological, Neo-classical scenes, indicating that this plate is part of a series. But, the transfer image is likely not exclusive to this Bavaria company -- a plate that has an image from the series (and a 'Limoges France' underglaze mark) is shown on p. 76 in Dubay's "Collecting Hand Painted Limoges Porcelain: Boxes to Vases" [2004]! But this particular plate I am offering here has an extra quality in that the well-designed and clear transfer image is highlighted with hand painted, white accents (the mixtion technique). But not just added in a routine or superfluous manner to simply add value with 'hand painted' details - rather, the accents truly add to the design by giving texture and sheen to the cupid's wings (gossamer wings!), as well as a sense of movement and sheerness to the lady's delicate gown. So pretty!

The 9 3/4" plate has an raised (embossed) Greek key border which has a lustrous, iridescent lavender color. An inner ring of gilded beading is a lovely touch. The backstamp is a shield mark used by Zeh, Scherzer & Co. of Rehau, Bavaria (Z.S.R. & Co.) from 1899-1909. This plate is in good condition with no chips or cracks, but there is a tight hairline on the outer rim (between lavender border and beaded band) at the 5 o'clock position and a nearby nick on the rim which can be seen on the back at the 6 o'clock position. I have tried to get clear photos of these flaws, but they are faint and difficult to see (please see last two photos). I have reduced the price for this beautiful plate, accordingly. Thanks for taking time to look around in my shop!
