This beautifully gilded plate was decorated at the Jesse Dean studio with an allover floral pattern. Jesse Dean (1845-1926) was a Staffordshire immigrant who in 1867 opened his decorating studio in Trenton N.J. (sometimes called the 'Staffordshire of America' with its numerous pottery production and decorating firms). Soon, with fifty employees, this (as well as Dean's second facility in New York City from about 1885 to 1920) became the one of the busiest, versatile and most popular of the many American decorating studios during the late 1800s and was the largest china-decorating workshop in the 1880s. The workmanship and style are very much like that of Pickard and his pieces are often mistakenly identified as belonging to that company.

This large plate is marked in reserve with Gaston's underglaze white ware Mark 1 for Gerard, Dufraisseix & Abbot (dating 1900-41), as well as a Jesse Dean mark. In very good condition with no chips, nicks, cracks or hairlines. There is light scuffing and some faint scratches in the well of the plate from other plates resting on it, as well as on the back. The dark areas in the photos are simply reflection and shadows. This beautiful plate was clearly used a few times for grand, table setting displays...as hopefully you will do as well -- display it in a prominent place, certainly, but also bring it down for special occasions! Thanks for taking time to visit my shop!
