The cup is 3 1/4" from handle to rim and stands 3" tall; the saucer is 5" in diameter. In excellent condition with no chips, nicks, cracks or hairlines. The gold wear is minimal - ca. 5%. Both pieces have the green underglaze white ware Mark 5 (1890-1932) and the saucer has the green wreath overglaze decorating Mark 8 (1906-1932). The saucer also has the green overglaze importing mark for John Wanamaker of the famous Philadelphia-based store chain (including London and Paris) and pioneer of the department store phenomena. This mark was used in the early 1900's, before Wanamaker's death in 1922 - dating this set to the early-to-middle range of the JPL marks, probably ca. 1915-20. Wanamaker was also an innovator in the use of advertising and a civic leader - in 1889 Wanamaker opened the First Penny Savings Bank in order to encourage savings and was appointed the U.S. Postmaster General by Pres. Benjamin Harrison. Wanamaker introduced the first commemorative stamp and set in motion the beginnings of free rural postal service. This mark was used in the early 1900's, before Wanamaker's death in 1922 - dating this set to the early-to-middle range of the JPL marks.
