This is a rare transferware tea bowl or handleless cup and saucer, originally part of a complete tea set. The shapely cup stands 2 1/2" tall on a raised pedestal base. The saucer measures 6" in diameter; both pieces have a graciously scalloped rim. Transfer printed in a brilliant cherry red or bright English pink with a pearlware glaze. The set is impeccably potted and light bodied.
The set depicts two young boys, one Anglo and the other African American, holding bows and arrows, playing at hunting in a lush cottage garden of oversized flowers. The border is decorated with bold floral cartouches inset with archery targets and arrows finishing the rim. The decoration is very rich, with little white space remaining.
The saucer is marked with the monogram "EKB"with the numeral 17 and arrows . The pattern name is commonly known as "ARCHERY" and the maker is Elkin Knight and Bridgwood, a pottery maker in Staffordshire England 1822-1846.
The set is in great condition, with no chips cracks or repairs. The saucer has a kiln kiss on the back rim; the cup has a transfer smudge on the interior rim and a distinct transfer seam on the exterior; both pieces have stilt marks, all typical of the period and original to the making. An oustanding example of this delightful pattern in a gorgeous shade of red and the rare maker's mark makes a glorious addition to any collection.
