Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Chatelaine, Clip, Chains 1899
For your consideration, a large, ornate sterling silver chatelaine complete with clip and three chains. The reticulated, or pierced top is decorated with dragons, a putto, and rocailles. At the bottom, where the loop for one chain is placed, there is a gargoyle. The three chains are also ornate, comprised of lion's head links, and on the bottoms are the clips for various attachments. All parts are marked. The front of the clip is marked with the city mark for Birmingham, the lion passant, the year letter for 1899-1900, and T Bros maker's mark. The back of the clip has the same year mark and the silver standard. Each chain link has the lion passant silver standard stamped, as do the loops connecting the links. The clips are also stamped. One of the clips has a different year marks and maker's mark: letter A for 1849 if Birmingham (there is no city mark) and CDB. Inasmuch as the chains do not have year or maker's marks, I cannot determine if the chains were 'married' to the clip, or original to it.
