3" x 1 1/4", hand cut and shaped from a naturally curved section of white ocean pearl oyster shell (Pinctada maxima), deeply incised or engraved with geometric patterns. The steel retaining wire is anchored by a hand hammered brass flange at both ends, each fastened by two facet-headed steel pins. No chips, repairs or other damage, and a good example of better buckles of the period.
