Warren W. Sheppard - Original O/C painting titled "Moonlight Sailing Boat" , signed by the artist lower right "W. W. Sheppard". The scene is probably of a sail on the lower Hudson River. He was born in 1858, Greenwich, NJ; and died in 1937, Greenwich. He studied with Hertzberg and M.F.H. de Haas, and in Paris and Venice, 1888-93. He exhibited at the Brooklyn AA, 1874-81; NAD, 1880-99; PAFA Ann, 1884; ST Louis Expo, 1904; and the Denver Expo, 1884(Gold). His works are at: Albright Art Gal; TMA; AGAA; India House, NYC; Mystic Seaport Museum; and the Peabody Museum. Sheppard was a yacht designer and sailor. He sailed up and down the New England coast from NJ to Maine, and use this experience to execute fine detail in his marine paintings. He won the famous New York-to-Bermuda race and published an authoritative book titled "Practical Navigation." He was also known for his canal scenes of Venice. The painting is 9 3/4 x 6 1/2 and framed is 12 3/4 x 9 1/2. The frame is old and is original to the piece. The painting dates from before the turn of the century, 1886, from an inscription on the stretcher. A wonderful nighttime scene with a full moon, and a steam ship in the background. A very calm and peaceful evening with the beginnings of a fine sailing adventure. The painting has wonderful provenance. The pictures were taken with a digital camera for true colors and details.
