SOLD Catlin George - Hand Painted Lithograph of Native Americans Indians - published E. C. Biddle, Phil. in 1837 (after Catlin) - Titled " Hunting the Buffaloe"
George Catlin born 1796 Wilkes-Barre PA. and died 1872 Jersey City NJ. He was self taught and a member of NA and the American Academy of Fine Arts. His works are in many Museums including Am. Mus. Natural History, NYC; Chicago Natural Hist. Mus.; NMAA; US National Mus.; and Upenn. He made his first visit to the West in 1830, and began his documentation of the Native Americans and their customs. Many of his works were destroyed in the disastrous Smithsonian fire of 1865. This hand painted piece is a very well preserved example of a litho done in the manner of his work. It is based on an original painting done by Catlin. It is very fresh and in excellent condition. The image is 9 x 15 with the border in good condition. The total size of the print is 14 x 19 3/4. There is a slight browning of the edge of the print, and very minor foxing. Lovely condition for an item from 1837. The lovely frame mahogany inlayed with a black border and is 18 x 23 1/2. It is double matted with glass (U/V), and the mounting of the print is such that three small waves are visable, but the angle of the light makes it appear wavier than it is. It has been framed in a museum quality manner. The pictures were taken with a digital camera and show very good detail. The colors are absolutely fabulous. It is Titled " Hunting the Buffaloe" . There is information on the print about the litho: 'Published by E. C. Bidddle, Phil.; Drawn, Printed, and Coloured at I.T.Bowen's Lithograph Establishment No. 94 Walnut St.;------in the year 1837'. The painting has successful, published auction records from one of the major New York City auction houses.
