George Catlin born 1796 Wilkes-Barre PA. and died 1872 Jersey City NJ. He was self taught and a member of NA and the American Academy of Fine Arts. His works are in many Museums including Am. Mus. Natural History, NYC; Chicago Natural Hist. Mus.; NMAA; US National Mus.; and Upenn. He made his first visit to the West in 1830, and began his documentation of the Native Americans and their customs. Many of his works were destroyed in the disastrous Smithsonian fire of 1865.
