This is truly a rare find. It was made by S. C. Spring. & Co. around 1864. Spring was born in 1826 and began his career working for S. B. Terry in Terryville, Conn. and then for Irenus Atkins before starting his own company. The Company was only in business for 4 years from 1864 to 1868. Solomon Crosby Spring was the last one to use the Joesph Ives' patent roller pinion brass strap movement. In 1868 he dissolved his company and joined Elisha Welch to form the Welch Spring & Co. The condition of this clock is remarkable good for its age. The rosewood case is near mint condition with no veneer chips it has been refinished at some time in the past. The dial has been repainted on the original dial pan, this was done a long time ago as there is some signs of age. The top and bottom glasses are original with the lower reverse painted tablet having some flaking. The label is about 90% and is as good as you will see on one of these clocks. The hands, weights, wooden pendulum rod and pendulum are also original. The original movement has been cleaned and is in good working order. It is a 8 day time and strike brass strap weight driven movement. This clock was part of the George Shaw collection that was sold at auction in Franklin, Pa. in July, 07. Mr Shaw was a collector of many things. There were several building packed full of clocks, cameras, furniture, books and almost anything you can think of. It appeared that he bought these items and stored them away and never actually used them. Mr. Shaw was the owner of Shaw Industries in Franklin, PA. The clock measures 30" tall and 18" wide. Please email with any questions. Thank You
