These are beautifully intricate, with a delicately shaped double handle bowl, and a cover bearing a gilded twig handle. The lovely design is found throughout, including inside the bowl. The saucer has a 5-1/2 diameter. The bowl is 4-1/8 in diameter at the rim and is 4-1/8 tall. The cover has a diameter of 4-1/2.
All pieces are marked. Most bear two Haviland back-stamps. The green H & Co. Limoges, France,. back-stamp denotes that the blanks were made by Haviland, ca 1879+.
The red back-stamp, Haviland & Co., indicates they were decorated at the Haviland plant, ca 1876+. The variation has a Haviland in an arc, above France, along with the Haviland & Co. mark. All bear a third back-stamp in an oval cartouche, within which is Made Expressly for J.E. Caldwell & Co. J.E. Caldwell is a high-end Philadelphia jeweler, established in 1839. In addition to jewelry, it carried other high-end products, notably silver.
All are in near mint to mint condition. They are a rare find!!
These are so beautiful and perfect, I'd be hesitant to use them with hot bouillon. But wouldn't they be lovely serving a chilled Vichyssoise or Gazpacho?
