This beautiful little guy (or gal!) is at least Victorian and possibly late Georgian. It would appear to represent a stag beetle, one that has been through a few fights, judging from some inexplicable holes in a leg and his chest and chips off a few of the opals.

Still, his body retains all six legs, two jaw-claws, and two antennae.

The eyes and back sections are garnet cabochons, and seven fiery opals adorn the head, midsection, and back.

These extreme close-up photos show the chipped stones at their worst. In person, the beetle's gems gleam and flash in the light. Price reflects the chips. In perfect condition, this charm would cost at least twice as much.

The gold tests at about 14K. Approximately 15/16 inch long including the ring soldered on at the top (but not the loose jump ring) (see photo).
