The complete title of this book is "Report of the Secretary of War; Being Part of The Message and Documents communicated to the Two Houses of Congress at the Beginning of The Second Session of the Forty-Fourth Congress" Volume II Part II printed by the Government Printing Office 1876. This is an ex-library volume which bears the stamp of Upper Iowa University. This book has leather covered boards and carries a misspelling in the binding cover. The binding on the spine has the title printed in gold with a misspelling as "THE REPORRT OF THE SECRETARY OF WAR ENGINEERS 2nd SESSION 44th CONGRESS" The interior of the book is in good condition with browning of the page edges but no missing pages or serious defacements. The front cover is cleanly detached but could be reattached and preserved. Inside of the book there are at least 30 fold out maps and charts showing engineering improvements on harbors, dams and lakes. The spine is intact otherwise and the cover is remarkably clean but shows wear. There are also a large number of black and white full page charts and drawings. This is a large heavy book with over 700 pages. Eleven fold out plates of Major General G. K. Warren's Report on the transportation route along the Wisconsin River and Fox Rivers between the Mississippi River and Lake Michigan. Plate 10 is a diagram of observations for stage of water on Lake Winnebago, on the Wisconsin River, and on the Mississippi at Prairie-du-Chien during the years 1867, '8, & '9. This final report is dated November 26th, 1875. A wonderful historical document regarding the upper Mississippi Valley in the middle of the 19th Century. These large plates were drawn principally by D. W. Willman and W. W. Rich.
