This white metal ornamental pin for the hair has a simple filigree flower at the end. It is a Japanese Kanzashi or hair pin. The pin is 10 1/2 inches in length (13.5 cm). The ornamental end of the pin has a small flattened spoon-like handle which is an ear spoon. I was provided with some history for these hair pin/ear spoon combinations by a wonderful customer browsing through Ruby Lane. The ear spoon was added to the end of the hair pin during a time when hair ornamentation was prohibited by law. The ladies got around this edict by adding a utilitarian item (ear spoon) to the hair pin so that they could use the ear spoon as an excuse for having the hair pin in their hair. This simple single filigree flower certainly fits the "played down" aspect of this historical information. The pin has no metal markings or maker's marks. This is a lovely old Japanese pin with a nice aged patina.
