Ceramic Pendant, Picture Jasper, Baltic Amber & Sinarin Silver Necklace

This necklace features one of my hand painted ceramic pendants with a floral motif of yellow and brownish green on antique ivory. These pendants are extremely labor intensive—I hand cut, bevel, sand and fire the blanks. Then I carefully draw my design which takes 3 layers of glaze put down as though it was with a Sharpie pen and fire again. Then I carefully fill in the design with several colors of glaze, and fire again. Although I do several at a time, they can take up to 10 days to complete.

I used earthy picture jasper rice beads, Baltic amber nuggets Bali sterling and handmade Sinarin silver beads. The wonderful Sinarin silver beads are of a style known as prakeuam and are completely handmade by descendants of Cambodian silver and gold smiths that immigrated to Thailand several hundred years ago. The silver is 95% silver—a higher silver content than sterling which is hammered into a thin sheet, cut to the desired shape, inscribed and then hand formed around a tree resin taken from pine trees. Finally, the beads are oxidized to darken the pattern. This timeless design measures 17 ½ inches including the sterling silver hook from Bali and the pendant measures 1 ½ inches in diameter.
