Other Information:
Cameos are carved from a variety of mediums including gemstones, hardstone agates, coral, ivory and various sea shells. We use the modern shell terms of sardonyx, carnelian (both named as they resemble the color of the sardonyx and carnelian agate stones) and pink to differentiate the particular color of a shell cameo. Scientific names vary from CASSIS MADAGASCARIENSIS, HELMET, CASSIS RUFA, CONCH, OYSTER, TIGER & more. Shell names of sardonyx and carnelian are not scientific but used today by modern cameo carvers, as well, to simplify the color identity process. These shells are not stones from which they draw their names, just the same color range. All genuine hardstones will be identified as such.
