Rebecca at the Well is definitely one of the most popular cameo scenes ever. Usually, they are carved in an abstract motif with very simple features and adornments. This Rebecca is quite the opposite. Well carved with fine features and plenty of adornments and background this Rebecca is one of the finest I have seen. Fairly rare in this motif, I have seen only a few like it. This cameo is Italian carved from carnelian shell and dates to the 1860's. It is at least heirloom quality with excellent carving and a fantastic 9 CT (stamped) hand made setting setting that is beautifully and intricately hand etched all around the surround. Consistent with its age, it is a brooch only, but a pendant bail can easily be added for wear as a necklace (we will be happy to help). This is a beautiful display piece and an acrylic cameo stand will be included.

The shell and setting are in unbelievably fantastic condition, especially considering its age. It has obviously been very well taken care of and/or rarely worn. All is in excellent original condition and ready to wear.

Crafted from thick carnelian shell, the carving has good depth from its considerable curvature. The exquisitely carved Eliezer is drinking water from a vase held by Rebecca. The well and palms are in the background. Eliezer is holding betrothal jewels behind his back.

This cameo in the setting measures 2 7/16" by 2", and the cameo alone is 2 1/8" by 1 3/4". The brooch pin closes with an old c-clasp in excellent condition and there is a safety chain for additional security. It weighs 17 grams as Rebecca is carved from a thick and supple shell and the setting is also very hefty.

The story of Rebecca at the well comes from the Book of Genesis. The aged Abraham, wanting a wife for his son Isaac, sent his servant Eliezer to his homeland of Mesopotamia to find a suitable woman. Tired after his long journey, Eliezer stopped at a well and prayed for guidance. When the sweet and kind Rebecca offered water to Eliezer and his camels, the old steward recognized her as the appointed bride and presented her with the betrothal jewels.
