Italian carved from genuine sardonyx shell, this 1930's cameo carving depicts the joyous scene of Cupid (Eros) leisurely listening and enjoying the harp music of Terpsichore, Muse of Dance and Music, Of course, Cupid's pose is as cute as only Cupid can be and Terpsichore is breathtakingly beautiful. The carving is crisp and awesomely meticulous and all is done in good relief. This really beautiful shell is long-lastingly thick and the very uniform chocolate background and very bright white foreground really make this one stand out and catch the eye.

This darling mythological scene stands out and catches the even more by being bezel set in a gorgeous solid 14K (stamped) yellow gold setting with 49 wonderful and genuine 3mm cultured pearls surrounding the bezel to add even more beauty to this cameo. The pearls are very uniform, all original and strung on a 14K gold wire. They have a deep nacre and lustre and, with this cameo's other fine features, help to make this cameo a very fine piece of jewelry in its own right. The cameo and setting are in mint perfect original condition and ready to wear. The cameo was either very well cared for or hardly ever worn for there is nary a line , crack or scratch on the thick shell or the hefty setting. Absolutely none (see back-lit picture)!

The set cameo, excluding the fold-down, hide-away bale, measures 1 7/8" by 1 1/2" and the cameo alone is 1 5/8" by 1 1/4". The brooch pin closes with a locking c-clasp, also in perfect condition. The total weight is a hefty 12 grams, destined to be a fine heirloom for you for many generations with its thick shell and fantastic craftsmanship.

This cameo features intense detailed carving throughout. Unbelievable facial features on both characters, the intricate harp and Cupid and Terpsichore's bodies from their curls to their hands and feet are phenomenal. Cupid, his wings and even his tushy are finely carved and just darling. Museum quality work from a true master carver that will always keep this cameo in high demand.

Terpsichore was the muse of music, dance and poetry and one of the nine Muses who presided over the arts and sciences, serving as an inspiration to those who excel at these pursuits. The muses were the daughters of Zeus, king of the gods, and Mnemosyne, goddess of memory. Terpsichore often performed for the Gods and took special pleasure in delighting Cupid and his mother Aphrodite (Venus).

Of course, Cupid or Eros is the god of the erotic. In popular culture Cupid is frequently shown shooting his bow to inspire romantic love, often as an icon of Valentine's Day. He is the son of Jupiter (Zeus) and Venus (Aphrodite), the Goddess of love. He is a lively youth who delights in pranks and spreading love.
