2 3/8" Vintage Nude Venus Dancing and Cupid Shell Cameo Brooch Pendant 9K Gold

This rare and lovely genuine Italian carved cameo depicts an erotic full figure Venus (Aphrodite) dancing nude as her son, and constant companion, Cupid (Eros) lies idly by. The carving is very well done with fine detail and crispness. It was expertly carved from carnelian shell most likely in the 1930's and reset in Birmingham, England in 1988 (hallmarked). The solid 9K setting is very hefty and finely crafted with a rope twist border and a smaller rope twist accent. The brooch pin closes with a locking c-clasp. For use as a pendant simply use the bale attached for the safety chain and have the brooch pin secure the chain behind the pendant. The craftsmanship put into this setting is amazing and perfect for this magnificent cameo. A collector or cameo lovers' dream carved from a very thick shell that is destined and constructed to last many centuries as a wonderful heirloom. The cameo and setting are in mint perfect original condition.

The cameo in the setting measures 2 3/8" by 1 7/8" (without the bale) and the cameo alone is 2 1/8" by 1 5/8". It weighs an amazing 27.4 grams (almost a full troy ounce) and I estimate that the gold must weigh more than half of that although the shell is very thick.

Venus was the great Olympian goddess of beauty, love, pleasure and and procreation. She was depicted as a beautiful woman usually accompanied by the winged godling Cupid (Love). Her attributes included a dove, apple, scallop shell and mirror. In classical sculpture and fresco she was often depicted nude.

This amply sized cameo is a fine depiction of Venus, in all her beauty, carved in a coveted full body scene with her adorable son and companion Cupid. All the attributes cameo collector's and lovers crave in this scene with two of mythology's most loved figures. Very lovely and very collectible!
