Red, red, glorious red coral for the holidays. Three strands of large coral beads with a Sterling centerpiece and easy on and off Sterling Silver tube clasp. Large chunky beads of all mediums are all the rage throughout the world.

Signed by the designer, "SSL" and "JC", this necklace was purchased from the flagship Neiman Marcus store in downtown Dallas, Texas in the early 1980's during Neiman's Asian Fortnight celebration. We do not have the original owner's receipt, but do have the original signature NM linen finish cardboard box that it came in. We do not know the designer's name or country of origin, but we believe the beads themselves are of Chinese origin.

This commanding necklace features three strands of barrel shaped red coral beads measuring 16", 17.5" and 19" clasped. The beads' color is a deep brilliant red and they are color enhanced.

The beads are strung on red silk cord and knotted individually. There is a centerpiece crafted from Sterling Silver measuring 33mm (just over 1 1/4") by 17mm (1 11/16"). The centerpiece is handcrafted with an unusual concave curve on each side, about the width of a woman's forefinger on the front and a pinky finger on the back. This centerpiece adds bold elegance to this lovely power necklace. The beads are barrel as opposed to perfect round shape and they are fairly uniform in size with most measuring in the 12mm range in diameter and 7-9 millimeter in width. The clasp measures 1 1/4" long and 5.5mm in diameter. The total weight of this candy apple red beauty is 241 grams. All beads are in excellent condition with a few beads exhibiting natural fissures inherent to all coral.

For a perfect lie on the neck, multiple strands sometimes require a custom fit adjustment. This particular necklace length is probably currently sized best for neck measurements of 14" and greater, but it can easily be restrung and it is always better to have more beads than needed to fashion matching earrings. My own neck measures 13" and this necklace is currently too large for me without removing a bead or two from each strand.

This signed piece is attributed to having been purchased at Neiman Marcus in 1983 during their signature Fortnight celebration in Dallas, Texas. But like many designer jewelry pieces at Neiman's, there is no NM stamp. Neiman's Fortnight celebrations were huge gala and cultural events that began in the late 1950's through the late 1980's when Neiman Marcus was purchased by an outside entity. (Perish that thought) Each year in October, Neiman Marcus showcased a different country or region of the world. In 1983, Neiman's Fortnight event was an Asian celebration the likes of none other ever seen in Dallas, Texas. Trade had just opened up with China and their offerings were, of course, second to none. The colors, the fabrics, the clothes, porcelain--simply unbelievable. They even introduced to Texas society the Shar Pei puppies, which had never been seen before here in the U.S., as part of their gala. I was fortunate to work right across the street from Neiman's downtown flagship store during the Chinese gala. The decorations alone had people standing in line to get into the store! And to be lucky enough to snag an invite to THE gala itself--divine! Quite an event every year! Fortnight just wasn't a mass of displays and merchandise, but a transformation of space that made you feel like you were actually traveling, shopping, and visiting museums in faraway lands.
