The red hue is just slightly less than a tomato red but not as light as the paler Sciacca more commonly found in woven coral designs of the late 19th century. The entire necklace measures 17 1/2 inches long and the woven rope itself measures about 6.5mm through the necklace. Each side mounted woven sphere measures 12mm and each intertwined loop measures approximately 1 1/2" by 7/8" (37x22m). The beads are in the 2.5mm range with one 4mm bead next to the clasp. The clasp itself is a simple spring that includes a bell shaped finish bead. There are no hallmarks and it appears to be gold filled. The measurement of the entire centerpiece, which includes both spheres and loops is just over 6 1/2" long, giving it and ample and glorious display on the neckline. The total weight is 34.9 grams.
As a lover of all coral jewelry, I have always been drawn to the woven designs myself, enjoying them to wear and to languish away hours closely examining their never ending weave. This particular necklace was woven with red silk cord. In addition, each of the five ovals was woven around a heavy gold wire, something we do not see often. The two spheres are woven around a coral bead. By giving extra support to these areas, they all feel quite stiff and without give, which is a good thing. The sturdy bases give much support to the weave itself in an area that all women tend to touch quite often. The cord appears to be in very good shape. It has been stabilized long ago next to one of the clasp ends and along one of the rope sides. I have owned and worn this necklace to rave reviews for several years and I can attest that it is very, very wearable.
Braiding or weaving beads into jewelry designs is a labor intensive art form, requiring many man hours to complete and quite demanding on the hands and eyes. The tiniest slip and everything is out of sync and has to be restarted.
This necklace looks great with any neckline--great with turtlenecks and sweaters in Fall and Winter or with scooped or v-neck styles, too.
Coral is the gemstone of the 35th anniversary and protects her from the evil eye. Victorians appreciated coral for its beauty and protective powers, even adorning small children to protect them from sickness in a time when life expectancy was quite low compared to modern health standards.
This coral eternity necklace will be delivered in a lovely presentation, perfect for gift giving and storage.
