Large and lovely and SO ready to please...unique in both carving and its 14K white gold setting design, it is destined to please.

Now we have all seen the popular and beautiful cameo carving depictions of the classic mythological Three Graces. Rarely do we see one sister without the other two, all dancing gracefully for the favors of the gods. However, this is a rare dancing depiction of the two youngest sisters, or Graces--Aglaea (Splendor) and Thalia (Good Cheer), embraced beneath the Graces' signature floral rose garland. Carved from brilliantly colored carnelian shell, the details are crisp and perfectly captured by the artist.

Set in a solid 14K white gold setting with Art Deco Period flair, we estimate the age of both the setting and cameo to be 1920-1930. The cameo is set in a very thick bezel, which is accented with a solid surround with detailed carving. Most white gold cameo settings will have a filigree wire setting and not a solid geometric scalloped pattern such as this one. This is a very solid setting that is not susceptible to bending and, thus, damage, like its lighter weight counterparts.

The entire setting measures 53mm (2 1/16") by 41mm (1 5/8"), not including the fold down locking bail. It features a brooch pin with early locking clasp, as well as a necklace bail. The extra thick shell and setting equate to a hefty 13.8 grams.

The thick shell allowed the carver to create great details in both of the maidens from the top of their heads down to the tips of their toes. Their figures are beautiful, as are their gowns....even the details given to the tiny roses in their garland are perfect!

Both cameo and setting are in excellent condition with no evidence of damage or previous repairs. To the top left of the carving can be see a group of vertical growth plates in the dark strata (background). These are not cracks, and not seen with the naked eye.
