Victorious! This is a rare and elusive shell cameo carving en habille set in 14K white gold of the Greek goddess Nike, winged goddess of victory. Her Roman counterpart is the goddess, Victoria. A temple to Nike still remains on the Acropolis in Athens.

This is the most beautiful depiction of Nike that we have ever had the honor to acquire. This wondrous goddess is more often depicted in various mythological scenes. A fine portrait carving embellished with a diamond habille is priceless! Carved in a style popular around 1890-1900, we estimate the cameo itself is a bit older than the early white gold (1915) setting.

Nike's strong, classic yet feminine facial features have been gracefully captured in this carving. The beauty of her Victory wings, nestled in her luscious curls adorned with roses is breathtaking. Her long locks cascade down upon her shoulders, drawing the eye to her richly ruched gown. The ruched gown bodice would also be in keeping with 1890's fashion. The large diamond habille necklace features a large old European cut 10 point (.10 carat) diamond measuring 3mm across.

The 14K white gold setting measures 49.5mm or just over 1 15/16" tall (without the fold down bail) by 39mm wide or just just over 1 1/2" wide. Including the bail, the total measurement is 53mm (2 1/6") in length. The cameo is expertly bezel set with a hand pierced surround outer mount. The handwork applied to creating the leaf and flower petal design on the mount is amazing. Many of the early 14K white gold settings relied on the use of feather weight wire filigree available to jewelers at the time and was not created hand. Even today, white gold is much more difficult to work with than yellow gold. The total weight is 11.2 grams.

Old European cut diamonds are highly collectible in themselves, cut unlike today's modern standards, with a smaller table. We have estimated the carat weight of this diamond based on modern GIA standards, but European cut will generally be slightly larger in carat weight based on diameter only GIA measurements used for set diamonds. This diamond has a nice color in the D-F range. Most of the old European cut diamonds used in habille cameos are a bit darker in the G-J range.

Nike is an old goddess, born before the Olympians and a symbol for the Olympic Games (as well as a complete line of sporting goods). She is the Winged Goddess of Victory and often seen with the goddess Athena, who never accepted defeat. Nike's Victory persona is deemed the result of achieving the aim pursued, but not limited to battle or sports. Success is Victory, doing the hard thing because it is right instead of the easy thing. Her followers believed that there is no pleasure by gaining Victory with hate, greed, contempt, revenge and fear (all the spoils of losers). Victory tastes bitter if it has not been honestly earned. A fine lesson for us all.
