This is a sweet mythological scene cameo, carved from carnelian shell, depicting the Muse Euterpe playing the flute for the Roman goddess Venus in her garden, while an impish chubby child, or putto, plays the cymbals. The rich colors of the shell is beautifully captured in this crisp scene.

Set in 9ct yellow gold, the mount measures 42mm tall, or just over 1 5/8", by 34mm (1 3/8"). The cameo is set in a thick bezel with a thick gold wire twist at its base. The setting is stamped with British hallmarks for 9CT gold (375), Birmingham Assayer's Office 1957. Also stamped is a copyrighted maker's mark of "JMC". The total weight is 9.9 grams, denoting the heavy setting as the cameo itself is carved in gossamer style.

The setting retains its original brooch pin, locking clasp and its original safety chain, looped at the top, making this brooch very simple to convert to a pendant. So many times, these safety chains get separated from these great brooches, so we have left this one intact. The scene depicts Venus in her Garden of Love, relaxing and being serenaded with the musical offerings of Euterpe, the Muse of lyric poetry and music. Euterpe is playing the flute and a young child is gleefully clashing the cymbals. Frescoes found at Pompeii depicted various gods being entertained with the flute and cymbals.

The carving has nice relief and detail, all as crisp as new. There are internal striations or growth plates at the top right of the carving, visible only with magnification and when candled to the light. The setting is also in excellent condition with no sign of previous repairs.
