FALL FESTIVAL SALE - Your Antique Coral & Cameo Connection - Free Shipping - Layaway Available
Handcrafted in Italy from genuine sardonyx shell and 585 gold, this stunning 5 cameo necklace is sure to please. It features Art Nouveau design in its sturdy yet delicate filigree framework, which holds three oval portrait cameos distinctively accented with two round flower cameos.
The entire necklace with chain measures 21 inches long. The trident lavaliere measures 2 3/4" by 1 1/2 inches. Each cameo is masterfully bezel set, with the bezels of the oval cameos measuring 14mm by 11mm and the round bezels measuring 7.5mm in diameter. The romantic swirling pattern coupled with Etruscan style beading is very reminiscent of the Art Nouveau period from the early 20th century. The floral cameos feature solid gold backs, and not open like most cameo bezels. Total weight of this necklace is a substantial 9.1 grams due to the density of the gold work.
This particular necklace is longer in length than the more common 16 inch found in this style. This is because the Russian (hallmarked) 14K chain itself appears to be a replacement, perhaps to add the extra length. This length looks great with any neckline and looks splendid with the higher collars too.
The lavaliere is hallmarked "585 Italy" and "585" with additional British hallmarks that we can't quite make out. The chain, however, has a Russian hallmark of "583" for 14K pink (rose) gold. To my knowledge, Russia is the only country whose hallmark distinguishes between rose and yellow gold. Rose gold is simply yellow gold with an extra percentage of copper added to the mix. It is also referred to as pink gold and red gold in some European countries. It became widely popular during the late 1800's, and continued to be popular throughout the 20th century on into the 21st century. Its romantic color is indeed a beautiful accent for any cameo, no matter what medium.
From the hallmarks and observations of this necklace, it appears that this beauty has indeed traveled in her life time. Acquired from a Miami estate, it originated in Napoli, Italy, most likely for sale in England, thus the double hallmarks. At some time, the original chain was replaced with a Russian gold chain, before making its way to sunny Florida, and now in the Rocky Mountains. This is a world class vintage gem!
A very beautiful and interesting piece of jewelry. With the naked eye, you cannot discern the difference in the gold's color. However, the pink/rose gold chain clearly illustrates its unique beauty against any skin tone. Rarely will you find a Russian gold chain here in the United States making it a collector's delight.
The necklace in its entirety is in excellent condition with no damage and no chips, cracks or damage to the very supple shell cameos.
A remarkable, one of a kind necklace that is sure to please. It will be delivered in a lovely leather presentation folder, ready to delight! While Britain is the home of some of the most beautiful cameos that came out of Italy, rarely will you see here in the U.S. yet much Russian gold jewelry. Truly a great conversation piece. Isn't that what all girls love?
In addition, we will include a copy of our complimentary cameo care instructions to ensure the everlasting beauty of this necklace for generations to come.
