Generously sized at over 2 3/4 inches in length, this lovely antique coral cross from the 1800's is sure to delight! The four red coral sections were hand set into the 14K yellow gold (tested) settings. What is unique about this cross is that the coral pieces appear to extend into the center where you can see the gold was crimped to keep them in place. Many times, they are crimped at the edges of the gold and later in life need a bit of glue to keep them in place. However, the jeweler who crafted this cross knew exactly what he was doing as they are as snug as new with no traces of help from glue.

This antique cross measures just over 2 3/4 inches, including the gold bail, by just under 1 1/2 inches wide, at 1 7/16 inch. The total weight of the cross is 5.1 grams. We have included a complimentary 18 inch gold plated chain.

I would estimate the age of this lovely cross to be circa 1860-1880. It is in excellent condition. On one side, viewable only with a loupe and our enlarged photos, it has minute solder repair spots, quite normal for jewelry of this age. A cross of this magnitude may have been created for a gentleman or a woman and would make a great gift for either, although for a man you would need a longer chain. Email me for chain requests.

As a collector of coral crosses myself, I highly recommend this one. Simple yet expert in design, very large in size and with a beautiful genuine Noble coral, close to tomato red in color.

The Victorians considered red coral to be a protector of evil with natural healing powers. For this reason, their children were often adorned in coral and the gift of coral to a loved one was considered a most auspicious gift of well being. It is no wonder the Victorians loved these coral crosses so much, as the combination of red coral and religious cross was sure to protect its wearer!
