Ahhh! Venus, goddess of love. Depicted here in this extra large, glorious and expertly hand-carved shell cameo, circa 1840, is the famous "The Birth of Venus". This is a signed piece that appears to have the signature BORA or BONN...? The master carver has combined Botticelli's version from 1485 and Rubens' version from 1632 to create a true masterpiece which includes the best known and most cherished figures of both.

In these artists' originals, each had Venus emerging, fully grown, from sea foam upon a large shell. Botticelli had her flanked by two groups of figures - on the left, the wind god Zephryus (Zephir) and his female companion speeding her to land, and on the right, female figures known as Hours (who were also known as the Horae, or Seasons) ready to cover her with a flowered cloak. The carver added Cupid and Psyche at her feet as in Rubens' version.

The result is simply stunning and marvelous! One glance at her and no one will wonder why all women want to look like Venus (Aphrodite)! A must have for collectors of scenic mythological cameos. This is a breathtaking museum-quality piece set in a solid 14K gold setting that measures 2 1/2" by 1 15/16" (NOT including fold down bail). Cameo with setting measures 1/2" thick and weighs 19.8 grams! Definitely not your AVERAGE size or QUALITY cameo!

Cameo, setting, bail and pin in absolutely mint original condition with no chips, cracks or evidence of any repairs whatsoever. Custom made solid gold setting from the early 20th century. Pin and clasp are absolutely perfect, as if this piece was never worn.
