Here’s a handsome stacking sectional bookcase that is still in very good condition. The bookcase has the original finish, wavy old glass and brass knobs with darkened patina. It also has nice claw feet in front.
This bookcase was made by the Gunn Furniture Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan during the early 1900’s. These bookcases are sometimes called barrister bookcases because they were often found in lawyer’s offices, as well as in other businesses and schools. We had to replace one of the backs, but it has been finished to match the others. The original triangular Gunn paper label is on the back of the top section. It has darkened considerably through the years.
Each bookcase section has a door that opens by sliding the door back into the case. The doors slide easily. The top section will hold books up to 9 inches tall and 10 inches deep. The next 3 sections are all the same size and will hold books up to 11 inches tall and 10 inches deep. The bottom section is the largest, and will hold books up to 13 inches tall. The overall height of the bookcase is 75 1/2 inches. The depth at the crown is 14 inches, and the width is 34 inches. When all sections are stacked together, each section is locked into the other and the bookcase is sturdy.
The doors, base, top and sides are made from quarter sawn oak.
