This is a fabulous watercolor signed Zerban 45 (for 1945). Below the watercolor written in pencil it reads Nurnberg Albrecht Durer Haus. This grand home of the famous Nuremberg painter and graphic artist Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) is situated close to Tiergärtnertor right below the Castle. The artist bought it at the height of his fame in 1509, and lived here until his death in 1528, together with his wife Agnes, with his mother, his pupils and apprentices. The essential fabric of the four-floor half-timbered house was built around 1420. In 1502, the previous owner, the astronomer Bernhard Walther (1430-1504) had had the mighty roof with its many ornate dormer windows lifted on the left-hand side in order to accommodate a further floor. After Dürer's death, the house fell into oblivion. It was only in the 19th century, that people started remembering the great painter. The house subsequently became something of a Dürer shrine. Major damage incurred during World War II was repaired as early as 1949. In 1971, the house was refurbished yet again and made into a museum of Dürer admiration, when a modern annex was also created. The current exhibition concept of "Back to Dürer" was the motto for the refurbishment started in 1994 and finished three years later. I was unable to find anything out about the artist but the work is wonderful! There are multiple vivid yet muted colors going on here everything from apricot and mint green to brown and baby blue! The detail is fabulous and the history that goes with this piece makes the ambiance very exciting! Overall it measures 19 ½” x 13 ¾” and the sight size is 10 ¼” x 7 ¼”. It is housed in a simple carved wood painted gold frame. The condition is perfect – there isn’t a speck of acid burning anywhere on the painting!
