Our selection of American Art Pottery, lamps, and vintage collectibles reflects our personal fascination for collecting.
We recently purchased several items from a local New Orleans estate. The couple traveled to South East Asia during the 1950s and 1960s. There are items clearly from China and others from Japan and a few I suspect came from Vietnam. This is one of 8 carved stone finials from the estate and probably date to the period they traveled in the Orient. They are probably Chinese as 2 of them are marked with what seem to be Chinese characters, but could be from another country in the area.
This finial is a greenish stone, carved on both sides in a pierced and carved pattern. I am not sure of the stone material, but it does not seem hard as jade but does have a smooth oily feel when rubbed between the fingers. The stone is almost 2 inches wide and is 2 inches tall, not including the lamp mount. The stone is wired to the metal and then soldered in place.
I have shown the finial in natural sunlight and backlit by sunlight. The last photograph is a group picture of 7 of them (there are 2 rose colored). I can ship any number for the same price, however insurance cost will increase.
